Devotions - Wednesday, Sept 30

This mornings appointed lesson dovetails neatly with a conversation we had last night at Bible Study. From Philippians 2:1-11 we read: "Let each of you look not only to your own interests, but also to the interest of others." The way of Christ, the life of a Christian, looks outward.

Remember yesterday's offering in which I discussed the difference between joy and happiness. I would push that a bit this morning by saying that joy comes to Paul because he has the mind of Christ - because he sees his life connected to all those who share his passion for Jesus. When we cease to look out for our own self interests, and begin to look out for the interests of others we too experience the joy of which Paul speaks.

We can become so preoccupied with our own concerns and needs that we become isolated. We cut ourselves off from those who have the power to lift us up, to hold us up. It is when we look beyond ourselves that we begin to see how large our lives can become.
